Climate Action Plan

At Ashperton Primary Academy, we are committed to taking meaningful action to address climate change and build a more sustainable future. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are at the heart of what we do and we foster a sense of responsibility in our pupils to care for the world around them as global citizens. We believe that education plays a vital role in empowering young people to understand environmental challenges and to make positive lasting changes which will prepare them for the world of tomorrow.

Our Approach
We integrate climate education across the curriculum, helping students explore the science of climate change, its global impact, and practical solutions. Through subjects such as science, geography, design technology and PHSE, students develop critical thinking skills and a sense of environmental responsibility. Each class has a specific climate action focus which include biodiversity; saving water; recycling; reducing our carbon footprint; reducing food waste; upcycling and reusing; and energy efficiency. Through a wide range of fund raising events, school trips, assemblies and educational activities the children foster a deep respect for the natural world, a sense of belief that they can and should make a difference and, perhaps most importantly of all, take an active involvement in making small, lasting changes which collectively have a significant impact.

Sustainability
We actively work to reduce our environmental footprint by:

  • Minimising waste through recycling and reusing initiatives
  • Reducing energy consumption with efficient lighting and equipment
  • Encouraging sustainable travel, including walking, cycling, and car-sharing
  • Promoting eco-friendly habits in daily school life
  • Growing and producing a wide range of fruit and vegetables on site to use in our school dinners, cookery projects and to feed our school guinea pigs
  • Reducing food waste with plans to further introduce a heavy duty composter which will be able to process any food waste, creating compost to supply our school garden
  • Saving water
  • Protecting and conserving the natural habitats on the extensive school grounds to encourage biodiversity

Student Leadership and Involvement
Students and staff play a central role in driving climate action. Science ambassadors, school councilors, project groups, and our sustainability working group, lead campaigns, organise fundraising events, and raise awareness within the school and wider community. Children are encouraged to be climate action heroes in their local environment, with positive actions and exceptional efforts highlighted and rewarded in our school assemblies. Children are involved in planting a range of fruit and vegetables and maintaining our large garden area.

Community Engagement
We work collaboratively with families, farmers, local organisations and international organisations, such as our partner school in Tanzania, to extend our impact beyond the classroom. Workshops, partnerships, and community projects help reinforce the importance of collective action. Our links with the Herefordshire Meadows Project to cultivate a meadow on our school site, extensive tree planting projects, and our most recent vegetable garden initiative show our commitment to working with the community for a more environmentally friendly, sustainable future.

Looking Ahead
We are continuously reviewing and improving our practices to align with environmental goals. By fostering knowledge, responsibility, and action, we aim to equip our students with the tools they need to contribute to a more sustainable world.

“We are at a unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we all have a responsibility to care for our Blue Planet. The future of humanity and indeed, all life on earth, now depends on us.”
