Design & Technology
At our school, Design and Technology is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum, encouraging children to become creative, innovative thinkers and problem-solvers. We believe that design is not only about making products, but about understanding needs, developing ideas, and evaluating outcomes. Through Design and Technology, children learn to take risks, think critically, and develop resilience as they refine and improve their work.
From the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children are given opportunities to explore, create and investigate through hands-on experiences that develop their curiosity and imagination. These early experiences lay the foundations for key skills such as planning, designing, and evaluating, in line with the EYFS framework.
As pupils progress through the school, learning is guided by the National Curriculum and supported by the Kapow scheme of work. We use Kapow’s carefully sequenced and cyclical progression of skills, ensuring that knowledge and techniques are revisited and built upon from Year R through to Year 6. This approach enables children to deepen their understanding and become increasingly confident in applying their skills across a range of contexts.
Children engage in a variety of meaningful design and technology projects, sometimes following the Kapow units directly and at other times applying the same objectives through cross-curricular links to their current topics. This ensures that learning is relevant, purposeful and engaging, while still maintaining clear progression in skills and knowledge.
Through Design and Technology, our pupils develop key learning characteristics such as creativity, perseverance, collaboration and independence. They learn to plan, make, test and evaluate, gaining a sense of achievement and pride in their work. By the time they leave our school, children are equipped with the practical skills and confidence needed to become thoughtful designers and innovators in an ever-changing world.
